forged a partnership, but jon karl is in washington, and the speaker fired off a letter just before we came on the air tonight? >> reporter: that's right. the speaker and the president were on the verge of an historic deal that would have cut spending by $3.5 trillion, dealt with the debt crisis and raised that debt ceiling. now, the speaker has fired off this letter to all the members of the house, saying the deal, the talks are over. he says it has become evident that the white house is simply not serious about ending the spending binge. in the end, the speaker writes, we could not connect. i'm told this broke down over a disagreement over how much to raise tax revenues. >> and jon, you know it wasn't long after we learned that this letter was coming that the president said he was going to fire back then, too. here's what the president just said, we'll get your reaction herere >> we have run out of time and they are going to have to explain to me how it is that we are going to avoid default. and they can come up with any plans s at they want and bring them up here and we will work on

us, i'm jenna lee. jon: and i'm jon scott. new developments in the drama that grips capitol hill and the white house. dueling plans are out now on raising the limit to our nation's credit card and reducing the deficit. wendall goler, our senior foreign affairs correspondent, is live on the north lawn. wendall? >> reporter: jon, starting today house republicans will begin trying to sell their proposal to cut the deficit and raise the debt ceiling to democrats, and if they don't, democrats in the senate will then try and sell their plan to republicans. the chairman of the president's national economic council says mr. obama's address to the nation last night was a warning that democrats and republicans aren't even close. >> what the president was trying to do was let people know that we really are at a stalemate, that we have, that nothing is coming out of congress that is likely to pass be both houses and that this is a time where we as a country have to come together and have compromise and have bipartisanship. >> reporter: saturday was the last time the president and can congression

sad as you say, greg. more developments as we get them from norway, greg burke, thank you. jon: we still have debt deadlock on capitol hill with the default deadline just eight days away now. congressional leaders are still struggling to hammer out some kind of a deal, one that would raise the limit on our nation's credit card while cutting trillions of dollars in spending. house speaker john boehner may unveil his own bill today. harry reid said it would be a nonstarter. wendell goler is live on the north lawn with more. >> reporter: speaker boehner's plan would take the spending cuts agreed to before talks with vice joe biden broke down and raise the debt ceiling a little less than that. it would satisfy the speakers bottom line which is cutting spending more than the debt ceiling is raids but we'd have to go through this all over again by the end of the year. the speaker said yesterday it would solve the immediate crisis. >> there is going to be a two-stage process. it's not physically possible to do all of this in one step. having said that, chris, i know the president is worri

, hope you're off to a good thursday, i'm jenna lee. jon: and i'm jon scott, we're here in the fox newsroom, and "happening now," buying time on the debt crisis. the obama administration signaling it is open now to a short-term deal that would raise the debt ceiling. only, though, if congressional leaders can agree on a, quote, significant deficit reduction plan. the short-term deal would give congress time to pass a larger plan and avert possible government default august 2nd, but right now 12 days from that deadline, there is no deal on anything. jenna: ifs and maybes. in the meantime, fox news poll showing 60% of americans would vote against raising the debt limit. the showdown over the future of america's financial security come against, well, another reminder of the grim economic reality we're all facing. jon: those new weekly jobless claims just out today came out higher than expected, 418,000 americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits. wendall goler live at the white house right now, explain the president's offer for this short-term extension of the debt ceiling.

jenna lee. jon: and i'm jon scott. dramatic new developments in that debt standoff in washington, and we are all over them. president obama speaking just moments ago urging republicans and democrats to reach some kind of compromise. he's warning the u.s. will lose its top credit rating if it falls into an unprecedented default. jenna: and it could lose that rating anyway. that's something we've been hearing a lot this week, that despite some of the decisions made in d.c., we could still see a downgrade. now, the political standoff as we know it is escalating this hour. a senior gop official, a house aide, i should say, telling fox news that house republicans will pass their debt plan today. we thought that yesterday. we'll see if it happens today. a bill that senate democrats say is dead on arrival, though, as they move ahead with their own debt limit bill setting up a showdown vote really for this weekend. ahead of that host of your world, neil cavuto, is live on capitol hill with his observations about what's happening down there in d.c., neil. first of all, let's start off wit

loads of unused spare change piling up as the nation stares down its debt. abc's jon karl explains. >> reporter: we took a journey to the u.s. mint in philadelphia for a lesson in how the government is losing money by making money. this is the presidential dollar coin. congress ordered the mint to make millions of them to honor every dead president but nobody seems to want them. they cost 32 cents a pop to make. the mint makes nearly 2 million of them every day. do the math. about 600,000 dollars a day to make them. because almost nobody uses these things, most go directly into storage. we found a bunch of them 100 miles down the road in a vault. here at the federal reserve in baltimore, the coins are packed into plastic bags stacked one on top of each other all the way up and down this aisle several aisles of them, millions and millions of dollars in presidential coins. federal reserve says they are piling up so quickly they are spending $650,000 to build a new vault in dallas to hold them. shipping the coins there will cost another $3 million. senator jack reed was one of the co-

did not expect. jon huntsman said in may he would not self-finance his presidential campaign even though he's rich enough to do that, at least in large part. today he didn't have to file any campaign fund-raising information, because he hasn't been declared for very long, but did say he raised about $4 million and his campaign would just say that he did contribute to his own coffering here. all they'll say, it wasn't a majority. only that what he gave is less than half. jon huntsman is, at least, sort of self-financing here and declaring it, and letting it be known. is that worrying in terms of his chances as a real candidate or encouraging because he has his own money to spend if he wants to? >> first of all, i don't understand the original statement. don't make a statement that you know can be disproved when the sec reports come out. and in terms of his fund-raising, i'm inclined to say, wait until the next cycle. i mean, jon huntsman has only been around for a little bit. i think his opening is that republicans who are not bachmann republicans decide that in the end he might ha
